Tulum Has A New Airport

You know I love Mexico. Been all over, and really love the Yucatan peninsula area. Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morales, the Riviera Maya. But travel into and out of Cancun has changed dramatically since I first landed there in 1978. It is now the busiest tourist destination in Mexico. Travel in and out, while efficient, can get a little hectic.

So the Mexican government, realizing that it can be a little crowded, decided to build a new airport about two hours south just outside of Tulum.

Tulum International Airport

Tulum has always been known for their Mayan ruins, underground cenotes, and as a sleepy little village where people can wander around and enjoy the local flavor.
But its popularity has increased many fold. Thus, the airport. And it is beautiful. Completed in only a year and a half (can you imagine that happening in the US?), it is quiet. Not a lot of flights going in or out, but fully stocked, staffed, and operational. Friendly people waiting to greet and serve you. There are a few nonstops from the US, but we had to connect in Houston. A minor inconvenience, but worth it to experience no waiting for an arrival gate, no lines at immigration or customs, and easy access to our transfer.

The Tulum area doesn’t have as many hotels to choose from as it’s big brother in Cancun. But for those who want to try something different, while enjoying the same activities and beautiful sunrises, I would suggest giving it a try.
